Trying to enjoy summer without constantly spraying everyone down with bug spray?
Editor's notes
I filmed this right before Memorial Day weekend when the backyard bugs were just waking up. The video shows me peeling these tiny, brightly colored essential oil stickers off a sheet and slapping them onto my kids' clothes before sending them outside. The premise is simple. You skip the daily ritual of coating your children in aerosol sprays that leave them sticky, smelly, slick, and crying about getting it in their eyes.
My honest verdict is that these patches work perfectly for casual evening playtime. If you are taking your family into a dense swamp, you will probably still want the heavy chemical sprays. For eating dinner on the patio or playing by the swing set, these little citronella stickers are completely fine. You just press one on a shirt collar and another on a pant hem.
One thing the video does not capture is the sheer force of the adhesive on these things. I left a yellow smiley face patch on my youngest son's cotton shirt by accident. It survived a hot wash cycle and an hour in the dryer. I pulled the shirt out of the laundry basket smelling like toasted lemon eucalyptus.
Nobody really cared about this video. It barely broke five hundred views and the comments were basically crickets. I posted it in mid-May, which was apparently about three weeks too early for anyone to worry about bug season. My opening line was also a bit clunky. People usually need to feel the actual itch of a mosquito bite before they bother buying a preventative sticker.
