Just a little after school scissor and fine motor practice ☺️ ✂️
Editor's notes
Welcome to my very favorite kind of afternoon survival tactic. If you found this page while searching for ways to keep a preschooler busy before dinner, you are in exactly the right place. The video here shows my oldest practicing her cutting skills with a very simple DIY setup. We just glued some long construction paper strips to the inside of an empty toilet paper roll and let her give the little cardboard guy a haircut.
My honest verdict on this activity is that it saves my sanity on chaotic Thursdays. Most fine motor setups you see online take twenty minutes to prep for two minutes of actual play. This one completely flips that ratio. I can throw it together in ninety seconds flat while flipping a grilled cheese sandwich. If you look closely at the video, you will notice she is holding her elbow awkwardly high. That is a classic beginner scissor grip. Kids often try to steer the scissors by lifting their whole arm instead of just letting their wrist do the work. It is completely normal but it is definitely something to watch so you can gently guide their hand placement as they grow.
This clip only grabbed a few hundred views when I originally posted it. I think my regular audience prefers messy outdoor play or things involving massive amounts of food coloring. Simple educational routines just do not get the same viral traction. The parents who did engage were genuinely grateful for a project that uses supplies they already have sitting in their recycling bin. It is not glamorous but it really works.
