Easter surprise watercolor activity! 🌼🐥 🥚

Editor's notes

This is one of those classic preschool art projects that looks incredibly impressive to a toddler but takes exactly two minutes to prep. You just draw a chick or an egg on plain white paper using a white crayon. When your kid brushes watercolor over the page, the wax resists the water and makes the hidden picture appear. My honest verdict is that it is a solid rainy afternoon activity, provided you press down hard enough with the crayon. If you draw too lightly, the whole thing just turns into a soggy yellow mess.

When I watch this back, I always notice the way the watercolor pools right inside the thick wax outlines during the first few seconds. It creates this tiny yellow puddle effect that is strangely satisfying to look at before the paper absorbs it. You also have to use those cheap classroom watercolors for this to work right. The expensive liquid watercolors tend to just stain the wax anyway.

The video itself did not get a huge reaction when I posted it. We landed at just over four hundred views. I think by April people are mostly tapped out on egg crafts. The folks who did interact with it seemed to just like the quiet, visual satisfaction of the paint revealing the drawing. I purposely left out a voiceover because the sound of the wet brush sweeping across the thick paper is relaxing enough on its own.
