One of our favorite activities!
Editor's notes
If you found this page while desperately searching for a way to keep a toddler occupied outside for more than twelve minutes, you are in the right place. The video walks through a very simple liquid mixing station. We set up a few clear plastic cups and let the kids stir colored water together. The honest truth is that this is a totally reliable backup plan on a dragging Tuesday afternoon. The primary trick here is swapping out traditional food coloring for squirts of washable kids paint. Food coloring will absolutely dye your patio grout and leave your toddler with permanent smurf fingers. Washable paint gives you the exact same bright colors but actually rinses away with a garden hose.
There is a very specific detail in the video that always catches my eye. When you first squeeze the washable paint into the water, it does not instantly dissolve. It sinks right to the bottom and sits there looking like a little neon jellyfish. The kids have to vigorously stir the water to make the color spread. That extra step of physical work forces them to focus just a tiny bit harder.
Despite how brilliantly this works in real life, the video completely flatlined when I posted it. It got literally zero views and zero engagement. It was a total algorithmic ghost town. I suspect the opening frame just looked like a boring pile of plastic recycling on my lawn. But I keep this page up because the activity genuinely works. It will buy you enough time to sit down and drink a cup of coffee while it is actually still hot.
