Ok, who remembers these?!! They still make them?!!

Editor's notes

If you landed here searching for screen-free distractions for your kids, welcome. This video shows me standing in a random pharmacy checkout line, having a full out-of-body experience over a handheld water ring toss game. You can literally watch my face cycle through shock and intense concentration as I try to land those tiny neon rings on the little plastic dolphins.

The verdict on whether these hold up is a solid yes. They are just as maddeningly difficult as they were in 1996. The right button always requires way more thumb pressure than the left button. There is still that one giant, mocking air bubble that deflects your perfect shot. As a teacher I actually love these for building kids' frustration tolerance. As a thirty-something woman I just wanted to conquer the dolphins. You will also notice I keep eyeing the tiny rubber stopper at the top. The urge to pull that plug and flood a store is apparently a lifelong instinct.

This clip did not exactly break the internet. My hook was terrible because I stand there staring at a piece of plastic in absolute silence for three seconds before speaking. The algorithm punishes you for that. But the engagement rate was surprisingly high from the few hundred people who actually stuck around. The millennial parents in the comments agreed that this thing completely hijacked our attention spans back in the day. It turns out a cheap plastic box of water is the original mindfulness app.
